Anticipating an epic match between local club Persija and Bandung-based Persib, about 35,000 supporters flocked to Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Thursday causing congestion in the surrounding areas.

Lukita, who passed the stadium on a motorcycle, said she experienced traffic jams before the game had started.

“I saw many members of Jakmania [Persija’s fan club] on buses, trucks and motorcycles when I passed the sports complex at 4 p.m,” Lukita said.

She added that many of the supporters were riding on top of buses.

Supporters of Persija are known for their fanatical support for their club.

Before every home match thousands of orange-clad supporters will make the trip to the stadium on cars, public buses or by any means possible.

The congestion is one of the lesser disturbances experienced by the public. On several previous occasions there have been reports of fans vandalizing public property.

On the way to Thursday’s match, which ended in a 2-all draw, Digi Ramadhan, a fan who attended the match, said he saw people hiding sharp weapons such as samurai swords and sickles under the seats of the minibus.

He and his friends also witnessed dozens of Persija supporters swarm a pair of Persib supporters in their car in front of the stadium.

“The driver was bleeding,” Haki Jayadirana, 16, said, adding that he saw the police take two badly-injured Persib supporters away from the crowd, who had set the two men’s shirts alight.

Police, however, did not report any incidents other than traffic problems.

Jakarta police detained three fans who brought sharp weapons to the stadium and ticketed 272 public buses and cars overloaded with dozens of Jakmania.

Second Brig. Fajar Andoyo from the police’s Traffic Management Center said vehicles could only move as fast as 20 kilometers per hour heading to Senayan from Semanggi as of Thursday night.

He said that his office had previously informed road users about the match and told them to avoid the stadium area.

“But we don’t suggest alternative routes. Its up to them [to choose a route],” he said.

Danang Ismartani, coordinator of the Jakmania, said it was difficult to avoid the traffic jam during the game given the fact to the already-crowded traffic situation.

“The congestion occurs because the end of the game coincides with peak hour,” Danang said.

On the unruly behavior of the fans, he said that Jakmania coordinators in each area of the city discouraged bringing weapons.

“We apply strict rules to our members so they will not violate traffic regulations. We will hand members over to the police if they break the law,” he said.

He admitted there some members were involved in fighting and were currently being processed at the Jakarta Police and Cilandak sub-precinct police office.

“But in most cases, those involved were not our members,” he said, disclaiming 38 supporters who were arrested for carrying weapons and drugs to a match on March 16.

At least 3,000 military and police personnel were deployed to safeguard a soccer match between two archrivals, Persija Jakarta and Persebaya Surabaya, at 10 November Stadium in Surabaya, East Java, on Saturday afternoon.

“We deploy more personnel than previous matches,” Surabaya police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Samudi told kompas.com.

Up tp 1,500 officers were placed inside and around the stadium, while the other will guard roads leading to the stadium.

Extra security measures are a must for the police when Persebaya play its archrivals since most of the matches in the past have sparked brawls among supporters both inside and outside the stadium.

Persebaya supporters bonek are infamous for their hooliganism.

As the 2010 FIFA World Cup soccer tournament kicks off on June 11, Jakarta Police said Sunday they would intensify surveillance on the Internet to crack down on possible online gambling.

A female tenant at the Mediterania apartment block on Jl. Gajah Mada, West Jakarta, jumped in apparent suicide attempt from the fourth floor of the building on Sunday afternoon.

She sustained severe head injuries and died on the way to Husada Hospital in Central Jakarta.
The building’s security officer, Taufiq Hidayat, said that the woman was a Hong Kong citizen and was 26 years old.

“She has been staying here for two years with her husband,” Taufiq was quoted as saying by news portal tempointeraktif.com.

A church in southern Malaysia has been vandalized, apparently the latest in a string of attacks on Christian houses of worship in this Muslim-majority nation, police said Saturday.

Eleven churches - as well as one Sikh temple - have been damaged since a court ruled late last month that non-Muslims can use the word Allah to refer to God. The decision angered many Muslims, who say the word is exclusive to their religion and its use by others could confuse Muslims into converting.

Officials at a church in southern Negeri Sembilan state found a window at their building smashed late Friday, said Saiful Azly Kamaruddin, a district police chief. He said police were still investigating, but the attack appeared to be vandalism.

Police have stepped up patrols and deployed more plainclothes officials in the area, he said.

Earlier Friday, police charged a Malaysian student was charged Friday after allegedly posting comments on Facebook about throwing a gasoline bomb.

Mohamad Tasyrif Tajudin, 25, allegedly wrote, "You want me to throw a petrol (gasoline) bomb there? We can negotiate the price" in a recent Facebook discussion over the use of the word Allah by non-Muslims. Many of the churches vandalized were hit by Molotov Cocktails.

He was charged under the Communications and Multimedia Act for improper use of the Internet, which carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a fine if found guilty, said deputy public prosecutor Dusuki Mokhtar.

"He was not the one who prepared the firebombs or committed the crime. But he misused Facebook with the intention to cause disturbance. Posting such remarks is sensitive and dangerous," Dusuki told The Associated Press.

Mohamad Tasyrif didn't enter a plea and will remain in police custody as the case was postponed until Monday, he said.

Since Jan. 8, unidentified attackers have hurled Molotov Cocktails at eight churches, one of which was partially gutted. Two other churches were vandalized with paint, and a Sikh temple was pelted with stones, apparently because Sikhs use the word Allah in their scriptures.

No arrests have been made in connection with the attacks.

The office of lawyers representing Christians in their legal fight for the right to use Allah was also ransacked.

The attacks followed a Dec. 31 court decision overturning a government order that forbade a Catholic newspaper from using the word Allah as a translation for God in its Malay-language edition. The ruling upset many Muslims in Malaysia.

Malay Muslims comprise about 60 percent of the country's 28 million people, with 2.5 million Christians.

The dispute has hardened a long-standing sense of alienation among the non-Muslim minority, threatening 40 years of ethnic peace and stability that underpins Malaysia's economic success.

The government has condemned the attacks on the churches and has vowed to uphold the freedom of religion guaranteed to minorities by the constitution.

A Malaysian court charged four more Muslims with attacking churches in a row over the use of the word "Allah" by Christians.

Three men and a teenager were charged Tuesday in northern Perak state with throwing firebombs at two churches and a convent school on Jan. 10, prosecutor Hamdan Hamzah said. They face a maximum prison term of 20 years.

The three men, aged 19, 21 and 28, entered no plea, while the 17-year-old, charged in a juvenile court, pleaded guilty to the offense, Hamdan and court officials said. Hamdan had wrongly said earlier three pleaded not guilty.

The minor's case will next be heard on March 24, while the others will be brought before court again next week, Hamdan said. They failed to post bail and have been jailed, court officials said.

Three other Muslims were charged last week with setting fire to a church on Jan. 8, the first and most serious incident in a series of attacks and vandalism at churches, a Sikh temple, mosques and Muslim prayer rooms.

The attacks have underscored religious tensions in the country, where minority Buddhists, Christians and Hindus complain they regularly face discrimination.

The latest tensions follow a High Court ruling on Dec. 31 that allowed the Herald, the main newspaper of the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia, to use "Allah" in its Malay-language pages. Allah is the word for God in Malay, the same as in Arabic.

The ruling upset some Muslims who believe "Allah" should be exclusive to Islam. The government has appealed the verdict, arguing the use of "Allah" by non-Muslims is confusing.

Some 60 percent of 28 million Malaysians are ethnic Malay Muslims. Much of the rest are ethnic Chinese and Indians, who mostly practice Buddhism, Christianity and Hinduism.

Malaysian police Wednesday announced the arrest of eight men who allegedly attacked a Christian church with a firebomb - the first suspects in a spate of unprecedented assaults on churches that raised religious tensions in this Muslim-majority nation.

The attacks on 11 churches and a Sikh temple followed a Dec. 31 court verdict that allowed non-Muslims to use the word "Allah" to refer to God. The verdict upset many ethnic Malay Muslims who insist that letting Christians use the word could confuse some Muslims and entice them to convert.

The dispute has strained ties between Malays, who make up nearly two-thirds of Malaysia's 28 million people, and religious minorities, which often complain about what they believe is institutionalized religious discrimination.

Authorities detained eight suspects since Tuesday in connection to the first reported attack at Kuala Lumpur's Metro Tabernacle Church, which had its office gutted by fire on Jan. 7, said Bakri Zinin, the federal police chief of criminal investigations.

"We believe that we solved this case," Bakri told a news conference.

The suspects were all Malays from 21 to 26 years old, according to a police statement. Police tracked them down after one of them sought treatment at a hospital for burn injuries, Bakri said.

The disquiet centers on a court ruling in which the Herald, the newspaper of the Roman Catholic Church in Malaysia, argued it has the right to use the word "Allah" in its Malay-language edition because the word predates Islam and is commonly used by Christians in other predominantly Muslim countries, such as Egypt, Indonesia.

Saying they have obtained new evidence, senior White House officials said the Pakistani Taliban were behind the failed Times Square bombing.

The attempt marks the first time the group has been able to launch an attack on U.S. soil. And while U.S. officials have downplayed the threat - citing the bomb's lack of sophistication - the incident in Times Square and Christmas Day airline bomber indicate growing strength by overseas terrorist groups linked to al-Qaida even as the CIA says their operations are seriously degraded.

The finding Sunday also raises new questions about the U.S. relationship with Pakistan, which is widely known to have al-Qaida and other terrorist groups operating within its borders.

Concerning the Pakistani Taliban, Attorney General Eric Holder said: "We know that they helped facilitate it; we know that they helped direct it. And I suspect that we are going to come up with evidence which shows that they helped to finance it. They were intimately involved in this plot."

John Brennan, the president's homeland security and counterterrorism adviser, made similar remarks, linking the bomber to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP.

Neither official said what the new evidence was.

Faisal Shahzad, a U.S. citizen of Pakistani descent, is believed to have spent five months in Pakistan before returning to the United States in February and preparing his attack.

Shahzad has told investigators that he trained in the lawless tribal areas of Waziristan, where both al-Qaida and the Pakistani Taliban operate. He was arrested aboard an Emirates Airlines jet in New York just minutes before it was scheduled to take off for Dubai.

After the attack, U.S. officials said they were exploring potential links to terrorist groups overseas but said it was likely that Shahzad was acting alone and that it was an isolated incident.

Last week, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, told NBC News that "at this point I have no information that it's anything other than a one-off." Gen. David Petraeus told The Associated Press that Shahzad apparently operated as a "lone wolf."

Brennan on Sunday rejected suggestions that that the attempted bombing shows that terrorist groups overseas were gaining strength.

"They now are relegated to trying to do these unsophisticated attacks, showing that they have inept capabilities in training," he said.

The link between an attack on U.S. soil and terrorist groups operating inside Pakistan opens up a new chapter in relations between the two countries. Until recently, administration officials have said they thought Islamabad was doing all it could.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Washington expects more cooperation from Pakistan in fighting terrorism and warned of "severe consequences" if an attack on U.S. soil were successful and traced back to the South Asian country.

Brennan said Islamabad was being very cooperative in the investigation but that the U.S. wants to know exactly who may have been helping Shahzad.

"There are a number of terrorist and militant groups operating in Pakistan," he said. "And we need to make sure there's no support being given to them by the Pakistani government."

Pakistani army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas, who last week said he doubted the Pakistani Taliban had anything to do with the failed bombing, declined to comment Sunday. He said representatives of the country's civilian government should respond. They were not available for comment.

Brennan would not say whether Shahzad may be connected to fugitive al-Qaida cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, other than to acknowledge his Internet sermons are popular among extremist Muslims.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Pakistan has recently stepped up efforts to root out extremist militants.

"The Pakistanis have been doing so much more than 18 months or two years ago any of us would have expected," Gates told reporters at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, this week.

He referred to Pakistani Army offensives, dating to spring 2009, against Taliban extremists in areas near the Afghan border, including in south Waziristan.

Gates said the Obama administration is sticking to its policy of offering to do as much training and other military activity inside Pakistan as the Pakistani government is willing to accept.

"It's their country," Gates said. "They remain in the driver's seat, and they have their foot on the accelerator.

Bandarlampung, Lampung  - A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku on Sunday, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said.

It said the quake which occurred at 09.02 a.m. was centered 246 km southwest of Saumlaki town at a depth of 119 km.

The quake did not trigger a tsunami warning.

Sunday`s temblor was the latest in a series of moderate quakes that hit the town in the past few months.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

Maluku province lies at the meeting point of the country`s two main chains of volcanoes.

Most of the residents came from coastal areas such as Lampulo and Ulee Lheu devastated in a magnitude 8.9 undersea quake and subsequent tsunami on December 26, 2004. They intended to flee to higher grounds in Lambaro area located 10 km from the coast.

There was no immediate report of casualties or material damage. But many roads in the provincial capital were congested following the quake.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said in an official website the epicenter of the quake which struck at 12.59 western Indonesian time on Sunday was in the sea 66 km southwest of Meulaboh in West Aceh district at a depth of 30 km.

The quake had the potential to trigger a tsunami, the agency said.

Several residents monitored the sea water level following the magnitude 7.2 quake from Krueng Cut bridge located about 2 km from the coast.

An ANTARA journalist observed tsunami early warning system (TEWS) sirens did not sound when the quake occurred.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) lifted its tsunami watch associated with a magnitude 7.2 earthquake that rocked Aceh province on Sunday afternoon.

The center lifted the tsunami watch 1 hour and 25 minutes after the quake, PTWC said in its website.

The center said based on its observation the sea water level showed no sign of significant tsunami wave following the quake.

The quake which struck at 12.59 western Indonesian time on Sunday was centered 66 km southwest of Meulaboh in Aceh province at a depth of 30 km.

The quake prompted thousands of residents in the provincial capital Banda Aceh to flee their homes to higher grounds for fear of a tsunami.

Indonesia is scheduled to hold talks with United Nations officials on its roles in the UN peacekeeping mission here next week.

The Indonesian delegation during the talks with the UN officials will be led by Indonesian Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro, Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa said.

Marty made the remarks after a meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the UN headquarters here on Friday (Saturday in Indonesia).

Marty said that during the meeting, Ban Ki-moon expressed his appreciation to the various roles Indonesia had played in the UN peacekeeping operations.

"The UN secretary general hoped that Indonesia would increase its roles, including its policewomen to be attached with the UN Formed Police Unit (FPU)," he said.

The Indonesian foreign minister said he had told the UN secretary general that Indonesia had made anticipatory steps on the possibility of increasing its contribution to the UN peacekeeping mission.

"We have so far wanted to increase our roles not only in the number of troops but also in improved quality of contribution such as the dispatch of policewomen for the FPU," he said.

Indonesia also wanted to serve as an exercise center for UN peacekeeping troops in the Asia Pacific region, the minister said.

He said that Yusgiantoro was scheduled to pay a visit to New York on May 12-13 to discuss matters relating to peacekeeping forces with the UN officials.

At present, the number of Indonesian peacekeeping troops and police being assigned with the UN in various countries reaches 1,674.

Banda Aceh- Conditions in Banda Aceh city have returned to normal on Sunday evening after an earthquake measuring 7.2 on Richter scale rocked Aceh province at about 1 pm on the same day.

Thousands of people who rushed out or left their homes during the earthquake have returned to their houses.

Trade activities such as those at Peuayong traditional market, Pasar Aceh and Kampung Baru, have returned to normal even since 2.30 pm local time.

Residents who live in coastal areas such as Kelurahan Lampulo, Kampung Mulia, Kramat, Kuta Alam and Ulee Lhue, Meuaxa, have also returned to their homes.
